Qualcomm Licenses Huawei's Novel LogicFolding Chip Technology in Major Patent Deal

Qualcomm has entered into a broad patent cross-licensing agreement with Huawei, securing patent licenses for Huawei's novel LogicFolding chipmaking architecture. The deal encompasses patents across 5G, AI, computing, and networking, with Huawei expecting its total cumulative licensing revenue to exceed $6.9 billion. This agreement serves as major international validation of Huawei's semiconductor design capabilities, proving that alternative architectures can compensate for restrictions in advanced photolithography. It strengthens Huawei's global intellectual property standing and provides momentum for its expansion into overseas AI markets. LogicFolding, tied to Huawei's "Tao Law" framework, optimizes time constants (τ) across device, circuit, chip, and system levels to boost performance and achieve up to a 55% increase in transistor density using vertical die stacking. Additionally, Qualcomm will acquire selected U.S. patents from Huawei in the fields of computing, AI, and networking.

## BACKGROUND

Developed to overcome performance bottlenecks caused by international trade sanctions and lithography limitations, Huawei's "Tao Law" introduces a multi-level optimization framework called LogicFolding. Instead of relying purely on shrinking physical transistor dimensions with cutting-edge EUV tools, this technique focuses on reducing signal latency and enhancing data transfer speeds through 3D vertical stacking and integrated system design.
