Qualcomm Acquires AI Infrastructure Startup Modular to Boost AI Computing

Qualcomm has completed its acquisition of Modular, a startup specializing in AI-native software infrastructure, on July 29. As part of the acquisition, Modular's co-founder and CEO Chris Lattner will join Qualcomm as Senior Vice President of AI Software and Platforms. This acquisition strengthens Qualcomm's AI software stack, helping it compete more effectively in AI computing across data centers, edge devices, and industrial applications. By integrating Modular's high-performance tools, Qualcomm can offer a more unified and developer-friendly ecosystem for heterogeneous hardware. Modular's core products, including the Mojo programming language, the MAX AI inference framework, and Modular Cloud, will continue to operate under their existing brands with Qualcomm's backing. The acquisition aims to maintain Modular's commitment to open, heterogeneous computing across CPUs, GPUs, and NPUs.
