Pony.ai and Uber to Test 7th-Generation Robotaxis in London
Autonomous vehicle company Pony.ai and ride-hailing platform Uber have announced plans to launch testing of 7th-generation Robotaxis in London within the next few weeks. This initiative expands their European footprint following previous commercial rollouts in cities like Zagreb, Croatia. Testing in a major European hub like London represents a significant step for Pony.ai's international expansion and technological validation in complex urban environments. It also reinforces Uber's strategy of integrating third-party Level 4 autonomous fleets directly into its global network. Pony.ai's 7th-generation autonomous vehicle system features 34 sensors—including nine LiDAR units and 14 cameras—providing 360-degree coverage and perception up to 650 meters away. The company aims to expand its global Robotaxi fleet to over 3,500 vehicles across more than 20 cities by the end of 2026.
## BACKGROUND
Pony.ai develops autonomous driving technology for passenger mobility (Robotaxis) and freight (Robotrucks) across China, the United States, and Europe. Robotaxis utilize Level 4 autonomous systems, enabling vehicles to operate without human driver intervention within specific operational design domains.
