Paul Christiano Joins OpenAI Foundation Board and Safety Committee

Prominent AI safety researcher Paul Christiano has been appointed to the OpenAI Foundation Board of Directors and its Safety and Security Committee. He brings extensive experience in AI alignment, safety evaluations, and technical standards back to OpenAI. His addition strengthens independent safety governance at OpenAI during a period of rapid technical advancement and heightened concern over frontier AI risks. Bringing a respected alignment pioneer into board-level oversight directly addresses growing public and industry calls for stronger safety controls. Christiano previously worked at OpenAI before founding the Alignment Research Center (ARC) and serving as head of AI safety at the U.S. AI Safety Institute within NIST. In his new role, he will contribute to safety oversight and evaluate risk frameworks for OpenAI's frontier models.

## BACKGROUND

AI alignment is the subfield of AI safety focused on ensuring artificial intelligence systems pursue human values and intended goals rather than unintended or harmful objectives. As frontier models become more capable, independent evaluations and white-box risk analysis have become essential tools for assessing potential safety hazards before model deployment.
