Pakistan Courts Deploy GPT-4 AI Assistant, Boosting Case Resolution and ROI

A nationwide controlled study in Pakistan's trial courts revealed that deploying a GPT-4-based AI assistant, named JudgeGPT, increased case resolution by 6.3%, resulting in an extra 1,848 cases resolved annually. The system, which cost just $1,300 to deploy, yielded an impressive return on investment of 38 to 50 times the cost. This study provides empirical evidence of the high return on investment and efficiency gains from deploying large language models (LLMs) in public sector environments. It demonstrates how AI can help judiciaries worldwide tackle massive case backlogs without compromising the quality of legal writing. The trial involved 1,559 judges across 118 courts, showing that targeted training was crucial in guiding judges to use the AI for text improvement and summarization rather than decision-making. In a pilot at the Lahore High Court, the system screened 194,000 cases and saved judicial officers approximately 1,340 hours of work by handling repetitive tasks.
