A report by The Information reveals that over 70% of Americans oppose AI data centers, leading to a surge in local bans on new facilities to over 500 in July 2026. This marks a significant increase from the 300+ bans recorded just a month prior in June. Public opposition and regulatory pushback present a critical bottleneck for scaling AI infrastructure, as developers face rising hurdles over energy, water, and environmental impacts. This resistance could slow down the deployment of next-generation AI models that rely on massive computing clusters. Nearly three-quarters of the July bans are concentrated in southern states like Georgia and Florida, while New York has paused approvals for data centers consuming 50 megawatts or more. Additionally, states like Massachusetts and Nebraska have halted tax incentives for data center developers.
