OpenClaw 2.0 Released: Major Updates to the Open-Source AI Assistant
OpenClaw has released version 2.0 (v2026.8.1), featuring a simplified setup process, a redesigned browser interface, and over 16,000 pull requests from 933 contributors. This major release significantly lowers the barrier to entry for self-hosted AI assistants by streamlining installation and improving the web-based user experience. The new installation process automatically detects existing AI subscriptions, API keys, or local models, allowing users to complete the remaining configuration through a conversational setup with Claw.
## BACKGROUND
OpenClaw is an open-source personal AI assistant designed to run locally on user devices and integrate with existing chat applications. Originally developed by Peter Steinberger in late 2025 under the name Warelay, it was derived from an earlier project named Clawd, which was inspired by Anthropic's Claude.
