OpenAI Reportedly Plans to Revive Sora as Professional Film Tool
OpenAI is reportedly in talks with a stealth startup founded by industry veterans to hand over its stalled Sora video generation model. The startup plans to reposition and adapt the technology into a professional film production tool. This move marks a strategic pivot for OpenAI away from high-cost, consumer-facing video applications and toward enterprise-grade media production. It allows the technology to find a viable commercial path through specialized professional software and services. The stealth startup was co-founded by Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, former Sora research lead Bill Peebles, and former Dropbox CFO Sujay Jaswa. Terms of the partnership are still not finalized, and it remains unclear whether the startup will receive the underlying model weights.
## BACKGROUND
Sora was originally developed by OpenAI as a text-to-video model and social media application capable of generating high-definition video clips from prompts. OpenAI previously halted the project earlier this year due to high computing costs, closing its consumer apps and discontinuing its API.
