OpenAI Releases Official ChatGPT Desktop App Public Preview for Linux
OpenAI has launched a public preview of the official ChatGPT desktop application for Linux, supporting major distributions like Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora. The application is available as deb and rpm packages for x64 and ARM64 architectures. This release brings native desktop integration to Linux users, who previously had to rely on web browsers or unofficial third-party clients. It marks OpenAI's expansion of its desktop ecosystem to cover all major operating systems alongside Windows and macOS. The app currently runs on XWayland by default, requiring the `--ozone-platform=wayland` flag for native Wayland support, and it does not yet support the "Computer Use" feature. Additionally, installing the package adds OpenAI's repository to the system, enabling future updates via package managers like apt or dnf.
## BACKGROUND
Linux display servers are transitioning from the legacy X Window System (X11) to Wayland, a modern and secure communication protocol. XWayland acts as a compatibility layer allowing older X11 applications to run on Wayland, while Chromium's Ozone platform abstraction layer enables applications like Electron-based desktop apps to run natively on different display servers.
