OpenAI Quietly Acquires Computational Photography Startup Glass Imaging for Over $300M
OpenAI has reportedly acquired Glass Imaging, a computational photography startup founded by former Apple engineers, in a deal valuing the company at over $300 million. The startup's core product, GlassAI, replaces traditional image processing pipelines with neural networks trained directly on RAW sensor data to achieve DSLR-quality smartphone photos. The deal signals OpenAI's expanding focus into specialized hardware integration and advanced edge vision capabilities. As OpenAI collaborates with former Apple chief designer Jony Ive on consumer AI hardware, Glass Imaging's neural ISP technology could power the image processing system for future devices. Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, both of whom worked on Apple's Portrait Mode technology. The company had raised about $30 million from investors including GV (Alphabet's venture arm) and Insight Partners, and its computational zoom technology is already used in commercial smartphone lines by Honor.
## BACKGROUND
Traditional mobile cameras rely on hardware-based Image Signal Processors (ISPs) to convert raw sensor data into visible photos through separate algorithmic steps like demosaicing and denoising. A Neural ISP replaces or enhances these stages with deep neural networks that correct lens aberrations, noise, and distortion simultaneously directly from RAW data, overcoming physical limitations of small smartphone camera lenses.
