OpenAI Partners with CodeAI to Launch ChatGPT for Teens

OpenAI has partnered with the educational organization CodeAI to launch "ChatGPT for Teens," a specialized version of its AI assistant designed for users aged 13 to 17. The platform features built-in learning modes, parental controls, and guardrails to prevent cheating on homework. This initiative addresses the gap in AI literacy among students by providing a structured, safe environment for minors to interact with AI. It represents a significant step in integrating AI into K-12 education while addressing academic integrity and safety concerns. The teen version automatically detects or prompts users for their age and redirects them to a learning mode that guides them through step-by-step problem-solving instead of giving direct answers. OpenAI and CodeAI will also establish a joint advisory board and launch programs like the "Hour of AI" and "Builders Challenge."

## BACKGROUND

CodeAI, formerly known as the non-profit Code.org founded in 2013, rebranded in June 2026 to expand its mission from computer science education to digital fluency and AI literacy. OpenAI has previously focused on educational tools, having launched "ChatGPT for Teachers" in late 2025 to provide educators with secure, classroom-compliant AI workspaces.
