OpenAI Merges ChatGPT Chat and Work Tabs While Keeping Codex Separate
OpenAI is updating the ChatGPT desktop app to merge the Chat and Work tabs into a single unified interface. Following this update, ChatGPT and Codex will also share a single token pool. This UI restructuring simplifies user workflows by allowing users to brainstorm, upload files, and execute tasks in one place, mirroring competitors like Anthropic's Claude. However, sharing a token pool may lead to more frequent rate limit resets for certain heavy users. The new feature is initially rolling out to a subset of users for feedback before a wider release, while the Codex feature remains a separate function within the desktop application.
## BACKGROUND
AI applications use token pools to measure and limit the amount of text data processed by their models during interactions. Desktop productivity apps for AI assistants often struggle to balance conversational chat interfaces with dedicated workspace tools for managing files and coding projects.
