OpenAI Launches Program Offering Free GPT-5.6 Sol Access to 100,000 Researchers

OpenAI has launched the "ChatGPT for Academic Researchers" program, which will provide free access to advanced ChatGPT features and the GPT-5.6 Sol model to up to 100,000 scientists. The initiative will initially roll out to 10,000 users from selected universities before expanding to an additional 90,000 researchers. By providing free access to its most advanced frontier model, OpenAI aims to accelerate scientific discovery and collaboration across academic institutions. This move could significantly lower the barrier to entry for researchers wanting to leverage state-of-the-art AI for complex scientific queries and data analysis. Participants will receive a version of ChatGPT with higher usage limits, a larger context window, and access to an extended deep research tool that can extract insights from specific sources like scientific journals. Additionally, invited researchers can extend these same benefits to up to four colleagues within their academic institution.
