OpenAI Launches Official ChatGPT Add-in for Microsoft Word Across All User Tiers
OpenAI has released an official ChatGPT add-in for Microsoft Word that allows users across all subscription tiers—including free accounts—to access AI assistance directly inside a Word sidebar. The tool reads the currently open document as context to draft, rewrite, summarize, proofread, and format text. This integration brings generative AI directly into the world's standard word processor without requiring a Microsoft Copilot subscription. By making the add-in accessible to free users, OpenAI significantly lowers the friction for everyday document editing and productivity workflows. The add-in can manipulate selected text directly, adjust headings, and reformat layout elements based on user prompts. Additionally, ChatGPT Business and Enterprise customers receive a limited-time preview from September 17 to September 30 to use the GPT-5.6 Sol model in Word without consuming their standard usage allowances.
