## BACKGROUND
Zero Data Retention (ZDR) is a privacy standard where an AI provider processes user prompts and model outputs in-memory without saving them to persistent storage. Traditionally, AI safety monitoring required retaining data to review for policy violations, creating a trade-off between privacy and security. OpenAI's new approach attempts to bridge this gap by analyzing safety risks dynamically without long-term data storage.
