OpenAI and Synopsys Partner to Develop GPT-Synopsys for AI-Driven Chip Design

OpenAI and Synopsys have entered a multi-year strategic partnership to co-develop GPT-Synopsys, a domain-specific AI model designed to automate semiconductor design workflows. The model combines OpenAI's advanced AI capabilities with Synopsys's Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools and agentic AI systems. This collaboration accelerates the integration of autonomous AI agents into hardware engineering, helping engineers explore more design iterations and optimize chip efficiency faster. By streamlining complex chip design cycles, it could significantly lower development costs and speed up time-to-market for next-generation silicon. OpenAI will license Synopsys's EDA software to train the model as a native expert user that can interpret design results, apply modifications, and run automated iterative validations. The two companies will share revenue and closely align on R&D as well as joint go-to-market initiatives.

## BACKGROUND

Electronic Design Automation (EDA) refers to the specialized software tools used by engineers to design, simulate, and test integrated circuits and microchips. In chip engineering, optimizing Power, Performance, and Area (PPA) is the primary goal for balancing energy consumption, processing speed, and physical footprint.
