Tech giants including OpenAI, Amazon, and Google are evaluating Argentina's cold, energy-rich Patagonia region for constructing large-scale AI data centers. OpenAI is reportedly considering a 500MW clean-energy facility in the region worth an estimated $25 billion. As AI workloads expand rapidly, finding locations with natural cooling resources and abundant power has become a critical strategic priority for tech companies. ## BACKGROUND
AI data centers require vast amounts of electricity both to power high-density compute hardware and to run intensive cooling systems. Regions with naturally low ambient temperatures enable data centers to use free-air cooling, significantly reducing power usage effectiveness ratios and operating expenses for large cluster deployments.
