NVIDIA Tackles AI Memory Bottleneck with Full-Stack Co-Design
NVIDIA introduced a full-stack co-design approach to combat the AI memory wall, achieving up to a 30x increase in agent throughput per dollar while increasing HBM capacity by only about 3%. This shift proves that the key to AI computing competition is moving from raw memory capacity to extracting higher efficiency per byte and watt, mitigating tight HBM supply constraints. The optimization leverages NVFP4 low-precision formatting, distributed model weights across up to 72 GPUs in NVL72 systems, Vera CPU LPDDR buffering, and Dynamo inference software to manage inactive contexts and RAG indexes outside HBM.
## BACKGROUND
High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) is a high-performance 3D-stacked DRAM essential for modern AI accelerators, but it suffers from severe supply constraints and high costs. KV cache stores attention keys and values during LLM inference to speed up generation, while Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) integrates external knowledge bases into prompts to improve model accuracy.
