Nvidia Reportedly Eyes $13 Billion Acquisition of Hugging Face
Nvidia is reportedly in talks to acquire Hugging Face, the leading open-weight AI model platform, in a deal valued at approximately $13 billion. This potential acquisition follows other massive consolidation moves in the open-weight AI space, such as Stripe's acquisition of OpenRouter and Nvidia's deal with Poolside. Acquiring Hugging Face would give Nvidia direct control over the largest open-source AI developer ecosystem, securing its chip dominance. This comes as major AI labs like OpenAI develop custom inference hardware, such as the Jalapeño chip, to reduce their reliance on Nvidia. Although open-weight models currently account for a small fraction of enterprise AI usage, they are gaining traction for high-volume, repetitive tasks due to lower costs and customization. The deal would allow Nvidia to promote its own hardware and software standards directly to millions of developers.
## BACKGROUND
Open-weight models are AI models where the trained parameters (weights and biases) are released publicly, allowing developers to run and customize them. Hugging Face acts as a central repository and community hub for these models, often referred to as the 'GitHub of AI.' Meanwhile, tech companies are increasingly seeking alternatives to closed-source models to avoid high API costs and gain more control over their AI workflows.
