NVIDIA Jetson Chips to Power Autonomous Robots on the Moon
Lunar Outpost and Firefly Aerospace are partnering with NVIDIA to deploy Jetson edge AI chips on upcoming lunar rovers and orbiters. These chips will control LiDAR systems and process lunar images locally to enable autonomous navigation and mapping. This marks a significant step in deploying commercial GPU-accelerated edge AI hardware in extreme space environments. It will allow lunar robots to make faster, autonomous decisions, which is crucial for establishing a long-term human presence on the Moon. The missions are scheduled to launch by the end of this year aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket. However, operating these chips on the Moon poses severe challenges, including surviving the long lunar night and enduring intense cosmic radiation without the protection of Earth's magnetic field.
## BACKGROUND
NVIDIA Jetson is a family of low-power, compact embedded computing modules designed to accelerate machine learning and AI workloads at the edge. The deployment is part of a broader push supported by NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, which contracts private companies to send robotic landers and rovers to the Moon to scout resources.
