NVIDIA Boosts Kimi K3 Model Inference Speed by 1.68x

NVIDIA achieved a 1.68x speedup in the inference performance of the 2.8-trillion parameter Kimi K3 model on GB300 NVL72 hardware. This was accomplished through upstream vLLM optimizations and massive Megakernel fusion. This performance leap demonstrates how advanced kernel fusion and software optimizations can drastically improve the serving efficiency of massive trillion-parameter models. It highlights the growing role of AI-assisted code generation in maximizing high-end hardware capabilities. The optimization pushed inference speed to 423 tokens per second per user using a 12,000-line Megakernel written in Cute DSL specifically for decoding tasks. The project was developed by Benjamin, an engineer at NVIDIA CentML.

## BACKGROUND

vLLM is a popular open-source serving engine designed to maximize throughput and memory efficiency for large language models. Kernel fusion combines multiple GPU operations into a single execution step to reduce memory bandwidth bottlenecks, while CuTe DSL provides advanced layout and code generation capabilities within NVIDIA's CUTLASS framework.
