MSI Unveils PRO MAX EDGE AI+ Compact Desktop with Ryzen AI Max+ 300

MSI has announced the PRO MAX EDGE AI+, a 4-liter compact desktop PC powered by AMD's Ryzen AI Max+ 300 processor. The system supports up to 128GB of high-speed 256-bit LPDDR5X memory and is designed for local AI inference. This device brings massive memory bandwidth and capacity to a small form factor, enabling local execution of large language models (LLMs) up to 120B parameters without requiring expensive discrete enterprise GPUs. Additionally, its USB4 clustering capability allows users to scale performance for even larger models. The desktop achieves an inference throughput of 15 tokens per second on a 109B parameter model, and connecting multiple units via USB4 allows it to handle models up to 670B. It features a built-in Flex ATX power supply, a 3-heatpipe 3-fan cooling system, dual M.2 PCIe Gen4 slots, and Wi-Fi 7 support.

## BACKGROUND

AMD's Ryzen AI Max 300 series (codenamed "Strix Halo") is designed with high-performance Zen 5 CPU cores and a massive 256-bit memory bus, which is twice as wide as typical consumer platforms. This wide memory bus is crucial for AI workloads, as local LLM inference speed is heavily bottlenecked by memory bandwidth. USB4 host-to-host networking enables high-speed data transfer between PCs, allowing them to pool resources for distributed computing.
