Mozilla Partners with Mistral AI to Expand Privacy-Focused Firefox Smart Window

Mozilla has partnered with French startup Mistral AI to expand beta testing of "Smart Window" in Firefox, starting in France. This privacy-focused feature brings contextual AI capabilities directly into the browser, allowing users to analyze open tabs, summarize complex topics, and organize browsing sessions. This collaboration demonstrates how browser makers can integrate generative AI tools while maintaining strict zero-data-retention commitments to protect user privacy. It also highlights the growing enterprise adoption of European AI models to deliver localized, sovereign, and privacy-compliant experiences. Both companies promised zero data retention: conversations are not stored on Mozilla servers by default, and Mistral will not use the data for model training. However, Mozilla notes that because responses rely on browsing context, the AI may occasionally misinterpret web content or provide inaccurate summaries.
