Moonshot AI Releases Open Weights for 2.8 Trillion Parameter Kimi-K3 Model
Moonshot AI has officially released the weights for Kimi-K3, a massive 2.8 trillion parameter model, on Hugging Face. The model weights total 1.56TB and are released under a custom license that requires large-scale commercial users to enter separate agreements. Releasing open weights for a model of this scale is a significant milestone in the AI ecosystem, lowering the barrier for running state-of-the-art models. However, the restrictive license terms for large commercial entities highlight the ongoing tension between open-weight distribution and commercial monetization. The Kimi-K3 model features a 1-million-token context window, native visual understanding, and is built on Kimi Delta Attention (KDA). Its license mandates that any "Model as a Service" business with over $20 million in revenue over 12 months must sign a separate agreement with Moonshot AI.
## BACKGROUND
Model weights are the numerical parameters that define the internal structure and decision-making logic of a neural network, essentially representing its learned knowledge. While "open source" typically implies unrestricted use, "open weight" models like Kimi-K3 provide public access to these parameters but often impose custom licensing restrictions on commercial deployment.
