Mojo Programming Language Compiler and Toolchain Are Now Open Source
Modular has officially released the compiler and toolchain for the Mojo programming language under the Apache 2 license, coinciding with the release of Mojo 1.0. This open-source release is a major milestone for AI and systems programming, providing developers with a high-performance language designed to optimize GPU and heterogeneous hardware workloads. Mojo has shifted away from its original goal of being a strict superset of Python, instead evolving into an independent language with Python-inspired syntax that leverages MLIR for advanced hardware acceleration.
## BACKGROUND
Mojo is a systems programming language developed by Modular that combines Python-like syntax with Rust-like safety features such as static typing and a borrow checker. Unlike many traditional languages that compile directly to LLVM, Mojo builds on the Multi-Level Intermediate Representation (MLIR) framework to better optimize code for diverse hardware like GPUs, TPUs, and CPUs.
