Mitsubishi Electric and Sony to Form Joint Venture for AI Vision Sensors

Mitsubishi Electric and Sony Semiconductor Solutions have signed an agreement to establish a joint venture named Advanced Vision Solutions, scheduled to begin operations in October 2026. The new company will focus on developing edge AI-integrated vision sensor solutions for manufacturing automation. This partnership combines Sony's advanced image sensor and edge AI technologies with Mitsubishi Electric's expertise in factory automation. By processing data directly on the sensor, it will enable faster decision-making and support the autonomous operation of manufacturing equipment to address labor shortages. The joint venture will focus on developing AI analysis systems that are directly integrated onto image sensors to capture subtle changes on the factory floor. This edge-based processing reduces latency and compute requirements compared to traditional cloud-based or external vision systems.

## BACKGROUND

Traditional computer vision systems send image data to external processors or cloud servers for AI analysis, which can introduce latency and high bandwidth usage. Sony pioneered the world's first intelligent vision sensor (such as the IMX500) that stacks a logic chip with a built-in AI engine directly onto the pixel chip. This architecture allows AI processing to happen directly on the sensor unit, enabling high-speed, secure, and power-efficient edge computing.
