MiniCPM On-Device LLM to Power Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Series
ModelBest announced that its MiniCPM series of on-device large language models will power text understanding and multimodal perception features on Samsung's new Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra smartphones. This marks the first time a Chinese on-device LLM is integrated into a major global smartphone flagship line. This integration demonstrates the growing maturity of lightweight, efficient on-device AI models capable of running locally on consumer hardware. It also highlights the expanding global footprint of Chinese AI developers in the highly competitive smartphone ecosystem. The MiniCPM models will run locally to support Galaxy AI features, specifically targeting text comprehension and multimodal tasks. The deployment targets Samsung's newly launched foldable flagships, including the standard Galaxy Z Fold8 and the premium Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra.
## BACKGROUND
On-device LLMs are language models optimized to run locally on consumer hardware like smartphones using their CPU, GPU, or NPU, rather than relying on remote cloud servers. This approach offers benefits such as enhanced user privacy, reduced latency, and offline functionality. MiniCPM is a series of highly efficient, pocket-sized open-source models developed by ModelBest and Tsinghua University, designed specifically for resource-constrained edge devices.
