Microsoft Tests Native Speed Test Flyout in Windows 11 Preview
Microsoft is testing a native speed test feature in Windows 11 preview builds, replacing the previous behavior of redirecting users to the Bing web browser. The updated tool appears directly within the 'Quick Settings' panel as a flyout interface. This change streamlines the user experience by keeping network diagnostics directly on the desktop instead of forcing a browser context switch. It also highlights Microsoft's increasing integration of AI-assisted agentic workflows into official Windows component development. Led by Marcus Ash, the feature was built using WinUI 3 and AI-assisted agentic workflows to accelerate development. Users can launch the test from the Quick Settings speed test tile, Wi-Fi or cellular panels, or by right-clicking the taskbar network icon.
## BACKGROUND
WinUI 3 is the native user interface framework for building modern desktop applications on Windows, decoupling UI controls from the operating system to allow independent updates via the Windows App SDK. AI-assisted agentic workflows involve using large language models and autonomous loops to streamline coding and task execution, aiming to boost developer efficiency.
