Microsoft Teams to Add Reporting Feature to Combat AI Deepfake Fraud

Microsoft is introducing a new "Report" feature and external bot detection capabilities in Teams to help users and IT administrators identify and mitigate AI-driven deepfake fraud and unauthorized meeting participants. The feature allows participants to report suspicious activities, such as phishing and impersonation, directly during a meeting or within the meeting chat. As AI tools lower the technical barrier for cybercriminals to clone voices and create realistic deepfakes, enterprise communication platforms face rising social engineering threats. This update provides organizations with a practical defense mechanism to protect sensitive corporate data and prevent financial fraud. When a report is submitted, Teams collects basic meeting data and limited contextual information to assist security teams in their investigations. Additionally, the new bot detection feature addresses privacy concerns by identifying unauthorized external AI bots that join meetings to transcribe or summarize discussions.

## BACKGROUND

Deepfake video call fraud has become a major security challenge, highlighted by high-profile incidents where employees were tricked into transferring millions of dollars by AI-impersonated executives. Concurrently, the proliferation of automated AI transcription bots has raised privacy and compliance concerns, as they often record and store sensitive conversations without the explicit consent of all participants.
