Microsoft Reportedly Plans to Debut Maia 300 AI Chip as Early as September

Microsoft is reportedly planning to introduce its new Maia 300 AI chip as early as September and is negotiating with TSMC to secure manufacturing capacity. The company aims to deliver at least 300,000 units of the chip by 2027. Developing custom AI silicon like the Maia 300 allows Microsoft to reduce its heavy reliance on Nvidia's expensive GPUs and lower the infrastructure costs of running large-scale AI models. It also helps Microsoft compete more effectively with cloud rivals like Google and Amazon, who have their own mature custom AI chips. Beyond internal use, Microsoft hopes to scale up production significantly and convince external partners, such as AI startup Anthropic, to adopt the Maia chips. However, Microsoft has historically lagged behind its competitors in the large-scale deployment of its custom silicon.
