Microsoft Phasing Out 'Copilot+ PC' Branding for 2026 Surface Devices
Microsoft is reportedly phasing out the 'Copilot+ PC' brand label starting with its upcoming 2026 Surface lineup and partner OEM hardware. The decision follows consumer pushback and severe security controversies surrounding flagship features like Windows Recall. The shift highlights a pivot in Microsoft's PC marketing strategy as dedicated AI hardware branding failed to resonate with buyers while facing backlash over privacy. Despite dropping the label, manufacturers will continue integrating powerful AI components quietly into standard specifications. Microsoft Surface VP Brett Ostrum confirmed that upcoming 2026 Surface devices will still satisfy all original hardware requirements despite dropping the Copilot+ label. Qualcomm executives also signaled that the industry term has largely outlived its initial purpose of defining a new device category.
## BACKGROUND
Introduced in 2024 alongside Qualcomm, the 'Copilot+ PC' certification designated Windows 11 systems meeting high hardware bars, such as an NPU capable of at least 40 TOPS, 16 GB of RAM, and 256 GB of storage. These specs were designed to power on-device AI features like Windows Recall, an ambient tool that continuously screenshots user activity for natural language search. However, cybersecurity researchers quickly exposed severe vulnerabilities in Recall's initial data storage, forcing Microsoft to postpone its rollout and severely damaging the Copilot+ brand identity.
