Microsoft Introduces AI-Powered 'Change History' Feature in Excel
Microsoft has introduced a new Change History feature in Excel that leverages Copilot to summarize edits, identify contributors, and answer natural language queries about workbook modifications over time. In collaborative spreadsheet environments, tracking complex edits across multiple users often leads to data confusion and broken formulas. By automating audit trails and change summaries, this feature helps teams maintain data integrity and troubleshoot spreadsheet issues much faster. The tool uses distinct colors to distinguish between manual human edits and Copilot-assisted modifications, enabling granular rollbacks of AI edits while retaining independent manual work. Additionally, Copilot can correlate formula failures with recent edit history to automatically identify which changes caused the error.
## BACKGROUND
Cloud-based co-authoring in Microsoft Excel allows multiple team members to edit spreadsheets simultaneously, but tracking individual cell updates historically required tedious manual inspection of version histories. Copilot is Microsoft's flagship generative AI assistant integrated across Microsoft 365 apps to automate complex workflows and boost productivity.
