Microsoft Integrates xAI's Grok Models into Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Copilot Preview

Microsoft has begun rolling out xAI's Grok models to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint through a limited preview in its Microsoft Frontier program. This expansion offers Microsoft 365 Copilot users a third-party model alternative alongside existing options from OpenAI and Anthropic. The integration demonstrates Microsoft's deliberate shift away from sole reliance on OpenAI toward a multi-model enterprise AI strategy. Allowing businesses to select among competing model providers gives organizations greater flexibility to match specific AI tools to their operational needs. The preview currently excludes users in the European Union, EFTA countries, and the UK, and requires IT administrators to explicitly enable Grok via the Online Services Subprocessor list because xAI processes customer data. Microsoft has not disclosed the exact Grok model version being deployed, though xAI's latest flagship model is Grok 4.6.
