Microsoft Announces Project Opal for Autonomous, Long-Horizon Enterprise Workflows

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced Project Opal for Microsoft 365 Copilot, an AI agent system capable of planning and executing complex, long-duration tasks autonomously. Available via the Microsoft 365 Copilot Frontier program, users simply input a natural language goal, and the system coordinates the end-to-end workflow over hours or days. This project marks a significant shift from quick conversational search prompts toward autonomous agentic workflows across enterprise software like Teams, PowerPoint, and Excel. It allows organizations to automate background operational processes such as compliance audits and onboarding, saving substantial manual effort. Project Opal operates inside a controlled environment by spinning up a dedicated Windows 365 Cloud PC and utilizing advanced reasoning models to control browsers and applications. Microsoft reported that engineers using Project Opal for internal quarterly compliance audits saved up to 20 hours per week.
