Microsoft Adds Copilot Button to Windows 11 File Explorer Preview
Microsoft has introduced a dedicated "Ask Copilot" button in the Windows 11 File Explorer Home page within the latest Release Preview channel. This button is designed to let users quickly send selected files to the AI for summarization and analysis. This update highlights Microsoft's ongoing efforts to deeply integrate AI capabilities directly into core operating system components like File Explorer, making AI assistance more accessible during daily file management tasks. Currently, the "Ask Copilot" button is not fully functional in the preview build, but it is expected to open a standalone Copilot window and load the file into the AI's context. There are potential concerns regarding how well the feature will handle large Excel spreadsheets or very long documents.
## BACKGROUND
The Windows Insider Program's Release Preview channel allows users to test upcoming Windows features and updates before they are released to the general public. Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant, which relies on a "context window"—the maximum amount of data or text the AI model can process at one time—to analyze and summarize user files.
