Micron Establishes US Research Lab with $10 Billion Investment for Next-Gen Memory

Micron Technology has announced the creation of the Micron Research Lab in Boise, Idaho, committing $10 billion over the next decade. The lab will focus on long-term research in core memory technologies, advanced computing architectures, chip packaging, and next-generation semiconductor manufacturing. As the first dedicated memory research center of its kind in the US, this initiative aims to secure US leadership in the AI-driven economy by accelerating breakthroughs in memory technology. It complements Micron's broader plan to invest over $250 billion in US manufacturing and R&D. The lab will establish a global research network linking Micron's teams in the US, Europe, and Asia with academic, government, and industry partners. This collaborative approach is designed to bridge the gap between fundamental scientific research and commercial application.

## BACKGROUND

Modern AI workloads are heavily bottlenecked by the speed and energy cost of moving data between processors and memory. To address this, the semiconductor industry is exploring advanced packaging techniques like 3D ICs, emerging memory types (such as MRAM and ReRAM), and Processing-in-Memory (PIM) architectures that perform calculations directly within the memory chip.
