Meta Open-Sources Muse Gadgets to Build Custom AI Hardware
Meta has open-sourced Muse Gadgets under the Apache 2.0 license, offering ESP32 firmware and Linux SDKs that allow developers to build custom hardware powered by Meta's Muse personal AI agent. Alongside supporting Raspberry Pi and various ESP32 boards, Meta unveiled a reference hardware device called Muse Home Link for smart home integration. This initiative bridges personal AI agents with low-cost edge devices, allowing makers and developers to create custom physical AI hardware and smart home controllers. It highlights a shift toward personal AI agents operating as runtimes that interact directly with physical sensors, displays, and embedded systems. The Linux SDK allows Muse to execute shell commands and manage files using the host user's account privileges, while full UI interfaces with animated avatars are supported on select ESP32 boards. Meta explicitly warned about security considerations, such as unencrypted Wi-Fi credentials in flash memory by default and the lack of manufacturer verification for community pairing.
## BACKGROUND
Meta recently introduced Muse, a personal AI agent built to execute tasks and interact across a user's daily applications. ESP32 microcontrollers and Raspberry Pi single-board computers are ubiquitous, low-cost hardware platforms widely used by developers and hobbyists for IoT and embedded automation projects.
