MediaTek and NVIDIA Partner to Develop Custom XPUs Using NVLink Fusion
MediaTek and NVIDIA have expanded their partnership, with MediaTek utilizing the NVIDIA NVLink Fusion platform to develop custom XPU chips for AI factories and rack-scale systems. Additionally, NVIDIA is investing $3.5 billion in MediaTek's overseas convertible bonds while continuing collaboration on RTX/DGX Spark chips and automotive platforms. This collaboration allows MediaTek to leverage NVIDIA's high-speed interconnect technology to enter the high-end cloud AI infrastructure market. It also strengthens NVIDIA's ecosystem by integrating third-party custom silicon directly into its proprietary rack-scale AI systems. The custom XPUs will integrate into NVIDIA's rack-scale systems, utilizing NVLink Fusion's high-bandwidth, low-latency chiplet and interconnect IP. The partnership also extends to software-defined vehicle (SDV) platforms and consumer-focused RTX/DGX Spark chips for laptops and PCs.
## BACKGROUND
NVIDIA NVLink Fusion is an interconnect technology that allows hardware partners to connect their custom chips (XPUs) to NVIDIA's computing fabric using industry-standard chiplet architectures. "XPU" is a generic term for application-specific processors designed to optimize AI workloads by combining elements of CPUs, GPUs, and ASICs.
