Masahiro Sakurai: AI Will Spawn Clone Games, Making Creative Developers Essential
Veteran game developer Masahiro Sakurai noted that while the rise of AI will flood the market with countless clone games and mimicry, it highlights the irreplaceable nature of human originality. He pointed out that Steam's annual game releases have surged from roughly 275 in 2010 to nearly 19,000 in Japan alone. This perspective addresses growing industry anxieties regarding generative AI, reassuring developers that genuine artistic vision and direction cannot be automated. As barriers to entry drop and game volume increases, distinct human creativity becomes a crucial differentiator for commercial and artistic success. Sakurai cited the example of renowned game designer Fumito Ueda, explaining that even if AI could eventually learn to replicate existing styles like 'Ico' or 'Shadow of the Colossus,' it could never autonomously conceive Ueda's future creative projects.
