macOS 27 Apple Intelligence Storage Usage Exceeds Stated Limits, Reaching Over 30GB
Following updates to macOS 27, Apple Intelligence automatically downloads mandatory on-device AI models that consume far more storage space than official specifications claim. While Apple states maximum storage requirements between 8GB and 14GB, real-world tests and user reports show model sizes reaching over 20GB and up to 30.16GB. Because macOS 27 removes the ability to disable Apple Intelligence or prevent local model downloads, users cannot reclaim this storage space. This creates a notable strain on users owning base-model Macs with smaller storage drives. Testing showed an M4 Pro Mac mini using 20.67GB and an M3 MacBook Air using 22.42GB for the advanced AFM 3 Core model. Furthermore, lower-tier hardware like the M1 MacBook Air used around 14GB despite Apple officially setting an 8GB maximum threshold for those devices.

Apple Intelligence relies on Apple Foundation Models (AFMs) designed to execute locally on Apple Silicon to enhance privacy and response times. Newer on-device models such as AFM 3 Core require significant local storage and unified memory to run directly on Mac hardware without processing all requests in the cloud.
