Local 4B AI Model Autonomously Crafts Netherite Ingot in Minecraft
A developer built a pipeline using a 4B parameter model named Mica v0.5 to autonomously translate complex natural-language prompts into multi-step Minecraft crafting goals, successfully crafting a netherite ingot starting from bare hands. Instead of processing requests in a single shot, the model uses a chain of small multiple-choice questions to break down the task and determine the necessary steps. This demonstrates that relatively small, local language models can effectively handle complex agentic tasks when structured properly, offering a fast and practical alternative to heavy cloud APIs. The pipeline highlights how breaking complex instructions down into sequential decisions can dramatically improve local model accuracy and responsiveness. The system avoids keyword matching by selecting items strictly from game data, while local models were found to execute sequential decisions significantly faster than typical API-only decision models. While Mica acts as the decision-making brain, a separate bot script handles physical in-game actions like walking, mining, and crafting.
## BACKGROUND
Chain of thought prompting is a technique that enhances large language models by guiding them through intermediate reasoning steps to solve complex multi-step problems. Small language models with around 4 billion parameters are lightweight AI models designed to run locally on consumer hardware while offering high execution speed.
