LLMs Read and Write Neural Network Weights via Weight Space Programming
Latent Space explored Weight Space Programming, a technique where frontier LLMs directly read and modify raw neural network weights—such as editing Qwen's weights to reduce reasoning loops—guided solely by natural language specifications. This approach bypasses traditional autoresearch and gradient descent loops, representing a novel paradigm where AI models can directly inspect and patch other neural networks. It opens up new possibilities for agentic optimization and automated bug fixing at the weight level. The technical deep-dive covers advanced agent prototypes, direct weight manipulation (such as modifying a fraction of Qwen3 weights), and evaluation frameworks like the GDPx benchmark.
## BACKGROUND
Traditionally, modifying neural network behavior requires fine-tuning through gradient descent using backpropagation on training data. Weight Space Programming bypasses this training phase by allowing an LLM to directly treat model weights as data, reading and writing numerical parameters in the weight space to alter model behavior.
