llama.cpp Release b11979 Improves SYCL Performance with Vectorized Layouts
Release b11979 of llama.cpp introduces vectorized reordered-layout dequantization stores for SYCL across multiple quantization formats including Q4_0, K-quants, IQ3, and MXFP4. This update achieves substantial prefill performance speedups, such as a 28.7% boost on Q6_K models using an Arc Pro B70 GPU. These optimizations significantly accelerate prompt processing times for users running large language models on Intel and other hardware utilizing the SYCL backend. Such hardware-specific performance gains make local AI execution faster and more efficient on a broader range of accelerators. The changes transition various scalar dequantization stores into aligned vec<dst_t,4> vector stores while keeping model perplexity and output bit-identical. Benchmarks on an Arc Pro B70 showed primed prefill improvements ranging from +3.6% for Q5_K to +28.7% for Q6_K models.
## BACKGROUND
llama.cpp is a popular open-source software library used for running large language models locally with minimal resource overhead. SYCL is an open, cross-platform C++ abstraction layer that enables developers to write code for heterogeneous processors like GPUs using standard ISO C++.
