LinkedIn introduces AI spam reporting and scales back AI post generation

LinkedIn has launched a new reporting option that allows users to flag and hide low-quality, AI-generated spam posts. Additionally, the platform has scaled back its built-in AI writing assistant, shifting its focus from generating full posts to basic proofreading. This move highlights a growing industry pushback against the flood of generic AI content that threatens to dilute authentic human interaction on professional networks. If social platforms become dominated by machine-to-machine communication, they risk losing their core value for users. Users can report suspicious posts by selecting "Looks like AI spam" from the three-dot menu, which trains LinkedIn's system to automatically filter out similar content. Data from Pangram Labs reveals that one in four long-form social media posts over 250 words is now AI-generated, with LinkedIn being heavily affected.

## BACKGROUND

The rise of generative AI has made it easy for users to mass-produce text, leading to an influx of formulaic posts characterized by excessive emojis and bullet points. Pangram Labs is an AI detection startup founded by former Tesla and Google researchers that helps identify such synthetic content. Platforms like LinkedIn initially embraced AI writing tools but are now adjusting their strategies to combat the resulting drop in content quality.
