Lenovo Enforces 16GB RAM Threshold for Copilot+ PC Branding
Leaked specifications for Lenovo's upcoming IdeaPad Vibe laptops reveal a strict classification where models with less than 16GB of RAM are designated as "Non-Copilot." Even if equipped with the same AMD Ryzen AI processors, the 8GB RAM variants will not receive Microsoft's Copilot+ PC branding. This highlights the growing tension between Microsoft's demanding hardware requirements for local AI features and PC manufacturers' efforts to control costs amid rising RAM prices. It signals a clear market split where 8GB remains the budget standard for basic tasks, while 16GB becomes the entry-level gatekeeper for on-device AI. The IdeaPad Vibe will offer configurations ranging from 8GB single-channel RAM up to 32GB dual-channel RAM, powered by AMD Ryzen AI 5 435 or Ryzen AI 7 445 chips. Microsoft is simultaneously optimizing Windows 11 to run better on 8GB systems by reducing OS memory usage, even as it pushes for more local AI integration.
## BACKGROUND
Microsoft's Copilot+ PC standard requires a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of over 40 TOPS, at least 16GB of DDR5/LPDDR5 RAM, and 256GB of storage to run local AI workloads. AMD's Ryzen AI processors integrate dedicated NPUs, CPUs, and GPUs to accelerate these AI tasks directly on the device. However, rising memory costs have pressured manufacturers to reintroduce 8GB configurations to keep laptops affordable.
