Lenovo Doubles Footprint of North Carolina Manufacturing Facility to Boost AI Server Production
Lenovo has announced a major expansion of its NCSC manufacturing facility in Whitsett, North Carolina, doubling its footprint to 890,000 square feet. This expansion will boost server production capacity by 35% and support the assembly of direct liquid cooling systems. As demand for AI and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure surges, hardware manufacturers are scaling up local production to deliver systems faster. This expansion enables Lenovo to build advanced cooling systems locally, catering to the power-hungry needs of modern AI data centers. The upgraded facility will feature a 20MW power supply infrastructure designed to support the next two generations of HPC systems. Additionally, the expansion is expected to create approximately 1,000 new jobs in the region.
## BACKGROUND
High-Performance Computing (HPC) aggregates computing power to deliver much higher performance than traditional servers, which is crucial for training complex AI models. To manage the extreme heat generated by these powerful processors, Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC) circulates liquid in direct contact with components like CPUs and GPUs, offering far greater cooling efficiency than traditional air cooling.
