Leapmotor to Bring World Model Autonomous Driving to Budget EVs Under 100,000 RMB
Chinese EV maker Leapmotor announced plans to deploy its self-developed world model autonomous driving system across all vehicle series starting in Q1 2027, including budget models priced under 100,000 RMB (~$14,000 USD). Existing owners of over 350,000 lidar-equipped vehicles will also receive free software upgrades starting next year. Advanced autonomous driving features based on AI world models have traditionally been restricted to premium, luxury vehicles with expensive computing hardware. Democratizing this technology down to entry-level budget EVs could accelerate mass-market adoption of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) across the EV industry. The system runs on computing hardware ranging from 200 TOPS up to 1,280 TOPS, utilizing cloud-based simulation and onboard closed-loop training for continuous improvement. Leapmotor's 800-plus R&D team claims 100% full-stack in-house capabilities that enable up to eight algorithm version iterations per day.

World models in autonomous driving are advanced AI paradigms that perceive and predict how surrounding traffic environments change over time, enabling the vehicle to anticipate events and plan driving actions. Hardware performance in autonomous vehicles is typically measured in TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second), where higher computing capacity allows processing dense real-time data from sensors like cameras and lidar.
