Lattice Semiconductor Completes $1.65 Billion Acquisition of Firmware Provider AMI
Lattice Semiconductor has finalized its $1.65 billion acquisition of AMI, a major provider of BIOS and UEFI firmware. Under the agreement, AMI will operate as an independent business unit named "AMI, a Lattice Company" and will continue to be led by its former CEO, Sanjoy Maity. This acquisition merges Lattice's low-power FPGA technology with AMI's firmware expertise to deliver integrated hardware-firmware security and management solutions for AI and HPC infrastructure. It addresses the critical need for robust platform security and resiliency in modern data centers. AMI will maintain its "silicon-neutral" operating model, ensuring its firmware and management solutions continue to support all semiconductor vendors without favoring Lattice. The combined technologies aim to meet the strict security, power, and performance demands of modern AI workloads.
## BACKGROUND
FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) are flexible semiconductor devices often used to implement Platform Firmware Resilience (PFR) to protect system firmware from attacks. AMI is a dominant provider of BIOS/UEFI firmware, which initializes hardware during the boot process. Integrating these technologies helps establish a hardware Root of Trust (RoT) to secure servers against low-level vulnerabilities.
