Kimi K3 Three Months Later: Impractical for Local Use as Competitors Catch Up

Three months after its release, the 2.8-parameter Kimi K3 model remains largely impractical for local deployment due to its 1.56 TB full size and heavy hardware demands, while newer models like GLM-5.3 and Step 5 Preview have matched its benchmark scores. This assessment highlights the persistent hardware bottleneck in running massive open-weight Mixture-of-Experts models locally and demonstrates how rapidly smaller, more efficient models are closing the performance gap. Even with an active parameter count of 104B, all 2.8T parameters must be loaded into memory, requiring a minimum recommended quantization of nearly 600 GB of RAM and VRAM. Furthermore, its commercial license imposes revenue restrictions that require a separate agreement for companies making over $20 million.

## BACKGROUND

Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) is a neural network architecture where only a subset of parameters, known as active parameters, are used to process each token, increasing inference speed while the total parameters dictate the memory footprint. Quantization reduces the precision of model weights to save memory, and 1-bit or low-bit quantization represents extreme compression techniques that drastically lower hardware requirements at the cost of potential accuracy loss.
