JEDEC Releases JESD264, First Industry Standard for Silicon Photonics Reliability
JEDEC Solid State Technology Association has published JESD264, establishing the semiconductor industry's first unified qualification and reliability standard for silicon photonics (SiPh) devices. By defining common testing and manufacturing control benchmarks, JESD264 reduces deployment risks and clearly delineates reliability responsibilities among foundries, packaging providers, and system developers. This standardization will accelerate the adoption of silicon photonics technology in AI infrastructure, high-speed data centers, and telecommunications. The JESD264 standard covers complex photonic chipsets integrating lasers, modulators, photodiodes, and passive optical structures. It establishes component-level qualification protocols, assembly requirements, laser integration guidelines, and production process traceability requirements.
## BACKGROUND
Silicon photonics is an advanced technology that uses silicon platforms and light (photons) instead of electrical signals (electrons) to transfer high-volume data rapidly with lower power consumption. Historically, the silicon photonics industry lacked standardized reliability and verification frameworks, creating supply chain uncertainty for hardware manufacturers.
